Incredibly sparse spam month. Not just no spam worth commenting, but very few spam at all. Is May vacation month for spammers? Have the Earthlink filters, for the moment, caught up to the spammers techniques? We shall see what happens in June.

Two odd trends.

One was a line of text "If you cannot see the message please click here" followed by 3 pictures (I presume). Yeah. Right. Bet that worked well.

Another was a colored rectangle with white ad text and black nonsense text. But also hidden (though revealed when highlighted) was more nonsense text that was the same color as the rectangle.

The hidden text is just as nonsensical as the visible text. The HTML is all perfectly regular. They had a fair number of "the"s in them which spam tend to lack (spam, at least the kind that I get, has a dearth of "the"s and an overabundance of "but"s, "try", "see"s and "may"s) but nothing that I can see that hidden text would give an advantage to when passing through filters.

Popular this month once again were spam sports subjects containing tiny spam telling me "Med's are on sale" and a link. Obviously difficult to filter. The other popular spam were nonsense subjects like "! elucidate may croydon but cayuga may cellular it's yaounde" also for medications with several lines of random words (that are the source of all the "but" words like butpigeonhole).

It was a waste of time, useless, undesirable

With fewer spam in December as a Christmas present? Spammers got a lot of mileage out of the snow dump on Denver. The odd sender names continued but the new trend this month was an introduction of some fantastical "names" in the subjects like "Mancel Miramon Kupperman Sodapop Lippincott Tarkanian" and also several more "names" as spam footers that were even more deliciously elaborate.

"Sometimes Spam is artistic." At least that's what Adam Oconnell told me in a spam titled "regards strenuously".

A light month for good subjects but to make up for it some very odd sender "names". Meds are now "ed-s".

Earthlink is very good about filtering out the, um, male en,hance.ment spam before it gets to me, but a bunch slipped through this month. There was an interesting collection of euphemisms used to get past the filters: super size, big lift, super duper, improve your package, pencil dickitis, bendy boner blues, mammoth proportions (Yowch!!!), shortdick syndrome, large and in charge, thicker, fuller and longer (works for shampoo ads), "Gain the length and width you've always wished you had". Though a spam with the subject "Hang fat" was blunt enough that filters should have thrown red flags all over the place. Do keep in mind as you're browsing your own "How is your johnson" spam: "When choosing a peniz en1argement method, there are many MANY options these days. But very few are worth the money. In fact, most are full blown scams!"

Chunk of a story

Mostly spammers seem to lift pieces from books in the public domain. But this is from a book still in print: Consider Her Ways by Frederick Philip Grove. (There's a review at Review of The Origins of Canadian SF.) So I wonder how they got it. Possibly from a piece quoted in a review but there's a bunch of different pieces posted and captured by others from spam. I can't imagine spammers typing pieces of books in!

Not sure if it was a really good month or because I was keeping on top of it by going through the spam filter every couple of days.

Mixed in with spam trailing bits and pieces of the Craiglist user agreement, there was a bumper crop of randomly generated sentences. It was a refreshing change from the chunks of news reports that started in July or June. Must have been June since I deleted that month. The news reports were being used for subject lines too. June was a very boring month for spam.

No Annie's this month (though there was a "christian Mary"). And the "Was at ... when that" disappeared halfway through the month.

The names have hit a boring blip. The trend is for names to look like "Wade.U" and "Z.Virginia" Seems to me that would be a red flag right there for spam filters. Though the names inside can still be interesting. Faustino Healyu, surprisingly wasn't selling drugs but wanted to help me refinance my loan. Maybe a broker for the devil? (Though I suspect it was a spamination of Healy with an extra letter tacked on. There were several of those: Dumasx, Crowleye, Townsendj, Nadeauc.)

I put these up at my main writing promtps blog and attracted 3 comments from spammers in less than 24 hours. Since no one comments on my blog that was a huge leap! I assume Technorati picked up the post and that's the route that lead to the blog but which of these phrases attracted the spambots? And why would they be attracted to spam anyway?

The searchlight graphic that went with "even darkle as in searchlight" (such an intriguing phrase!) now seems even more apt. So maybe it was the searchlight that drew them. Well, anyway I'll store them here instead and see what happens.

Some intriguing odd phrases that almost mean something, names, single words .... It makes me appreciate the people who write spam filters. They have to find patterns in these nonsense generators.

Some spam from the past. May and June were deleted before I saved them so there's a gap.

Word lists were popular this month as subject lines and tacked on at the end of the email. Usually the subject lines have the structure of sentences or phrases even if the combination of words don't make sense but many of these were just random strings off, often interesting, nouns and adjectives. Also popular was pulling random bits of sentences from particular books. (David Copperfield, DH Lawrence's Women in Love and another was some mystery novel based around a ski resort.)
